- Connemara Public Library was inaugurated in the year 1896.
- It is situated in the Govt. Museum Complex Egmore, Chennai.
- In 1860, it was started as a small library by Captain Jesse Mitchell.
- In 1890, Anglo Irish Nobleman, Madras Governor Lord Connemara planned to extend the library and lay the foundation for new building.
- In 1896, it was opened and named as Connemara Public Library.
- It was designed and constructed by Indo-Saracenic Architect Henry Irwin.
- This library is one among the four largest national depository libraries in India.
- Connemara library has huge collections of books, periodicals and newspapers.
- Connemara library contains nearly 6,00,000 books.
- This is one of the biggest library in Asian continent periodicals halls, video and reference room. Also, this library has study centre for IAS Aspirants.
- Chennai's first library, installed with touch screen computer.
- First Librarian of this Connemara library was Mr. Edgar Thurston.
