About Erode District and Its History

  • Erode district is located in the northwestern part of Tamil Nadu bordering the state of Karnataka. Namakkal and Karur districts are located in the east of this district. Dindigul district in the south and Tirupur, Coimbatore and Nilgiri districts in the west.
  • Bhavani and Noyyal, the main tributaries of Kaveri and Palar Rivers, flow through a large part of the lands of Erode district.
  • Erode District is the leading place in Tamil Nadu for most power loom weaving. Kangeyam bulls and Uthukuli butter in the district are also very known in this district. The district is also leading in the production of tamarind.
  • Blankets prepared at Bhavani and Chennimalai are also exported to foreign countries. Bhavani Sagar Dam, Bannari Amman Temple, Kodumudi etc. are the highlights of this district.
  • Erode city is the headquarters of erode district and entirely a commercial center. This city is well known for its power loom textile industries and turmeric cultivation. The district has many attractions and sites for tourists.
  • Erode district has surrounded by a lot of educational institutions such as Engineering Colleges, Medical Institutes, Teacher Training Institutes, Art and Science Institutes, CBSE, Matriculation, Government, and Government Aided Schools. From Gobi Constituency, one candidate has been selected as a Member of Parliament. Famous Temple such as Bannari Amman Temple and Sangameswarar Temple has located near rivers Bhavani and Cauvery.
  • Up to 850 A.D., Erode was under the control of Cara Kings. After that, it was captured by Great emperor Cholas. Later it was continuously ruled by Pandyas, Modeen Sultans, Madurai Nayaks, Hyder Ali, Tippu Sultan, and British East India Company.

Erode Famous Tourist Attractions & Places of Interest

Thanthai Periyar Ninaivu Illam Erode
Thanthai Periyar's memorial has been set up in a very large area in the city of Erode. Many photographs are on display along with the materials used by him. The road where the memorial is located is named after him.

BhavaniSagar Dam
Bhavani Sagar Dam is located about 75 kilometers from Erode. Bhavani Sagar Dam is 16 km from Satya Mangalam. This very ancient bridge has various features that delight tourists.

Bhavani Sangameswarar Temple
This temple in Bhavani Nagar is situated at the confluence of Kaveri and Bhavani Rivers. This place has many names like Dakshina Prayagai and Mukkudal. The elaborately built Sangameswarar Vedha Nayakiyamman temple is the most ancient and famous temple. This place is also called Bhavani Kooduthurai kovil.

Chennimalai Murugan Temple
The Murugan temple on the highest hill here is the most famous in Chennimalai. Bus facilities are provided to go to the temple and have darshan. Chennimalai can be reached in about 45 minutes from Erode and 8 kms away from Ingur Railway Station.

Kodiveri Dam
Anaicut is located at a distance of about 55 kilometers from Erode. Built in the 17th century, this ancient bridge is becoming a tourist hub now.

Arulmigu Utthanda VelayudhaSwamy Temple
One of the most ancient Murugan temples is the Uthanda Velayudaswamy temple on the Uthiyur Hill near Kangeyam. This place is about 60 kilometers from Erode.

Sivanmalai
The Shiva temple situated on this hill near Kangeyam is very famous in Erode. Thai Poosa Thiruvizha festival is celebrated grandly here in the month of Thai. At that time many pilgrims from outside visits here.

Kodumudi Sivan Temple
It is noteworthy that the famous Shiva temple in Kodumudi has the same sannadhi with Vishnu and Brahma. Kodumudi is about 41 kilometers from Erode.

Arulmigu Bannariamman Temple
The Bannari Amman Temple, which is very popular in Erode district, is located in a forest area at a distance of 11 km from Bhavani Sagar.

Pariyur Kondathu Kaliamman Temple
Kaliyamman Temple is a very famous place located at Pariyur near Gobichettipalayam. This temple also has shrines of Saptha Kannika and Siddhi Ganesha.
