About Kanchipuram District and Its History

  • Kanchipuram, only thing that naturally comes to mind are Arignar Anna, Silk Sarees and Shankaracharya. It is also one of the seven holy places of Hindus. Kanchipuram city is the administrative headquarters of the Kanchipuram district.
  • Although many tourist centers are located next to Chennai, they belong to Kanchipuram district.
  • The temples at Kanchipuram were the crown jewels of Tamil Nadu sculpture. There are several famous Temples like Lord Vishnu's Varadharaja Perumal Temple, Lord Shiva's Ekambaranatha Temple. Adi Shankara established Shri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham in Kanchipuram.
  • Kanchipuram is famous for its Finest Manually made Silk Sarees. Nearly 5,000 families have been involved in this Silk Sarees Weaving Business.
  • Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Viswa Mahavidyalaya Deemed University with one of the Asia's biggest International Library is located in Kanchipuram.
  • Kanchi was the capital of the Pallavas for about 200 years from the 6th century AD. Like other historical cities, Kanchipuram also came under the Cholas after the 8th century. Later it was ruled by Vijayanagar Kings, then Muslims and the British. Kanchipuram was well known for its culture and religious background.

Sri Kamakshi Amman Temple Kanchipuram
The temple, which is decorated with elaborate carvings, is an ancient temple of about 600 years with golden gopuram. This place is considered to be the first of the Shakti Peedams. Special abhisheka worship is held in Sri Kamakshi Amman Temple on Fridays.

Ekambareswarar Temple
Ekambarar Temple is one of the Panchabhoodha Temples, which is a fine example of Tamil Nadu sculpture. It is one of the few South Indian temples to have a very large Rajagopuram. The pillars and thousand-foot mandapam of this temple, which has a very wide praharam, are examples of fine sculptural architecture.

Vaikunda Perumal Temple
About 1300 years old, this temple is east of the Kailasa Nath temple. One of the main Vaishnava temples, Perumal Mukkolam is prominent here. The walls and pillars are resplendent with rare sculptures in this temple. The Vaikunda Ekadasi festival held in Vaikuntha Perumal temple is very famous.

Kailasanathar Temple
This very ancient temple is a masterpiece of architecture and sculpture. This place is also known as Rajsimeswaram. The temple has many sannadhis around the moolasthanam along the prakara wall. It is notable for having black rock construction.

Varadharaja Perumal Temple Kanchipuram
Varadaraja Perumal Temple, one of the 108 Vaishnava temples, is a resplendent temple with rich sculptures that catch the eye and the mind. The sculpture of Rathi Manmadhan and the stone chain are significant in Varadharaja Perumal Temple. The annual Garudotsavam held is very famous in this temple.

Shri Chitragupta Swamy Temple
It is noteworthy that Kancheepauram has the only temple for Chitragupta. The temple is located near the Kanchipuram bus stand.

Sriperumbudur
Ramanujar was born in this place, which is 30 kilometers from Chennai on the way to Kanchipuram. The Perumal temple is very famous in Sriperumbudur, it is one of the main shrines of Vaishnavism with beautiful carvings.

Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Sriperumbudur
On 21 May 1991, Rajiv Gandhi, former prime minister of India, who came with a smiling face at night, was Assassinated at Sriperumbudur.

Thiruparuthikundram
Tiruparudhikunram is situated near Kanchipuram. An ancient Jain temple is located in Thiruparuthikundram. The ancient paintings in this Jain temple are remarkable.

Vallakottai Murugan Temple
The famous Murugan Temple is located in Vallakottai, which is worshiped by Arunagiri Nathar and is also mentioned in Thirupugal Malai. One of the special features of this temple is the majestic appearance of Moolavar with Valli Deivanai. This temple is 1-hour drive from Tambaram.

Tirumalpur Thiru Manikandeswarar Temple
At Tirumalpur, near Kanchipuram, there is a temple of Manikandeswarar Temple. The specialty of this temple is that the Tirumal worshipping Lord Eswaran.

Uthiramerur Sivalayam
Uthiramerur Siva temple with beautiful carvings is very popular in Uthiramerur. The moolavar and sculptures in this temple are remarkable.

Sri Kamakshi Amman Temple Mangadu
Mangadu Kamakshi Amman temple near Chennai is the most famous temple in Mangadu. Throughout the month of Aadi, special worships and festivals are held with great pomp. Pooja takes place from 8 am to 8 pm. Nadai is usually closed between 1 pm and 3 pm.
