Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary & National Park

  • Mudumalai National Park or Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the northwest of the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu on the border of Karnataka and Kerala states.
  • Established in 1940, it was the first forest reserve in South India.
  • Initially the reserve had an area of 60 sq.km. It was later expanded to 295 sq.km. in 1956. It was further expanded to its present area of 321 sq.km.
  • Also, this national park has been declared as one of the World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.
  • Bengal tigers, Leopards, Elephants, Wildebeest, Langurs, Deer, Malabar Squirrels, Pythons, Oriental Garden Lizard, Wild dogs, Sambar Deer and Indian muntjac (Barking Deer) an be seen in this National Park.
  • 226 species of birds, high grasslands, dense forests, bamboos and beautiful streams are found here.
