Mukurthi Wildlife Sanctuary & National Park

  • Mukurthi National Park is situated on the western side of the Nilgiris. The place is division of the Western Ghats to the west of the Ooty Hills.
  • The main reason for setting up a national park at this place is to protect the Nilgiris Tahr species. As it is part of the Western Ghats, this national park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Mukurthi National Park is elevated in some areas and these elevations vary from 4,900 feet to 8,625 feet. Popular peaks in the park are Kollaripetta, Mukurthi and Nilgiri peak. All these three peaks rise in the park. The peaks are characterized by their granite rocks.
  • If you take a walk in the national park you will find Mukurthi Dam. The dam is a sub-section of the Baikara Electric Project, near the village of Glenmargon.
  • Nilgiri Tahr, Elephants, Bengal Tigers, Leopards, Nilgiri Giraffes, Nilgiri Langurs, Sambar Deer, Barking Deer, Wild Cats, Wild Dogs, Black Eagles, Wood Pigeons, Tree Frogs and various colorful insects are found here.
