About Namakkal District and Its History
- Namakkal city is the headquarters of the Namakkal district in Tamilnadu. Namakkal district was separated from Salem District by the year 1997.
- India's second-largest poultry industry and poultry farms are found in this district. Namakkal is famous for the largest truck transport industry and chicken egg production in Tamil Nadu.
- Two Cave Temple, Ranganatha Temple, Tallest Hanuman Shrine, Rock fort, Kolli Hills & lorry bodybuilding companies are popular in this district. There are famous temples and tourist centers in this district. One of the special features of the Namakkal is that it has a temple with the largest statue of Anjaneyar in Tamil Nadu.
- The district has a long history from the 9th century. The place mentioned in the Puranas as Namagiri gets the name Namakkal. Namagiri rock found here is the reason behind the name "Namakkal" for this place. It is a single rock with a height of 65m. Above the rock, there is a fort, which was built by Great Emperor Tippu Sultan.
- Surrounded by hills and rich in nature, this industrial city is proud to be the birthplace of the famous Tamil poet and peace activist Ramalingam Pillai.

Namakkal Famous Tourist Attractions & Places of Interest
Kolli Hills
As Yercaud is to Salem, Kollimalai is special to Namakkal district. There are more than 10 villages in this hill
with an area of about 400 square kilometers. A lot of food, flavorings and herbs are available here. The water
fall on this mountain is remarkable. Kollimalai foothills can be reached in about 1 hour from Namakkal.
Agaya Gangai Kolli Hills Namakkal
The beautiful waterfall in Kolli hill is called Agaya Ganga. Arapaleeswarar Temple, Government Herb Farm,
Botanical Garden, Telescope Center etc. are notable places in this waterfall area. The beauty of the aiyaru
river which cascades from a height of about 135 feet is amazing.
Anjaneyar Temple Namakkal
Anjaneyar Temple is very famous in in Namakkal town. The temple is notable for its huge single stone
statue of Anjeneyar.
Namakkal Kavignar Ninaivillam
The house where Tamil scholar and poet Namakkal Ramalingam Pillai lived has been converted into his memorial.
Objects used by him, various documents, photographs etc. are displayed in this house.
Ardhanareeswarar Temple Tiruchengode
Lord Shiva appears here as Arthanareeswarar in a look unlike anywhere else in Tamil Nadu.
Kailasanathar Temple
This temple is called Keezakoil. The main god here is also known as Pandeeswarar. Built by the Pandya king,
this temple is an ancient Shiva temple.
