About Perambalur District and Its History

  • Perambalur town is the headquarters of the Perambalur district of Tamilnadu. Perambalur and Ariyalur districts located between the districts of Trichy, Tanjore, Cuddalore and Namakkal.
  • Perambalur district was separated from Trichy which had the distinction of being the largest district of Tamil Nadu in 1995 and then Ariyalur was separated from it and made a separate district.
  • The district land has been found with soils like Red Loamy and Black Soil. Cauvery River is the main river used by people for irrigation, agriculture, and other purposes. Paddy, Groundnut, Sugarcane, Millets ad Cashew is the major crops cultivated in this district.
  • There are many stone mines in this district, it also leads in cement production. This district is famous for minerals like Limestone, Shale, Sand Stone, Canker, and Phospate. Also, this district is Popular for Lignite in Jayankondam Areas.
  • This district was ruled by Marathas in 1741. Also, it was under the control of Brave emperors like Chanda Saheb, Mohammed Ali, Umdat-Ul-Umara and Donald Campbell, Hyder Ali, and Tippu Sultan. Eventually, this district also ruled by British till independence.

Perambalur Famous Tourist Attractions & Places of Interest

Siruvachur Sri Madhurakaliamman Temple
The most famous place here is the Madura Kaliamman Temple. The chariot festival held on the Tamil New year and the utsavam held at Panguni well celebrated here. Special prayers are held on Mondays and Fridays in this siruvachur amman temple. The temple is located near Perambalur.

Sri Bala Dhandayuthapani Temple Chettikulam
Dandayuthapani Swami Temple, situated at a distance of 23 km from Perambalur, at Chettikulam, is also famous for its antiquity. The Ekambareswarar temple here is Very famous. The temple is resplendent with beautiful sculptures and Thaipusam festival is celebrated for 10 days with great pomp.

Ranjankudi Fort
The fort at Ranjangudi, 18 km from Perambalur, was built by the Nawabs in the 17th century. This fort has a mosque, a pond and a palace. The huge cellars here are remarkable.
