About Ranipet District and Its History

  • Ranipet district was separated from Vellore district on 15th August 2019. As the 36th district of Tamil Nadu, this district was formally inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on 28th November 2019 at Ranipet.
  • Ranipet district comprises two divisions of Ranipet and Arakkonam, Six taluks like Arcot, Walajah, Kalavai, Sholinghur, Arakkonam, Nemili, and 330 revenue villages.
  • National highways tracks 4 (Ranipet – Chennai), 46 (Bengaluru – Chennai) and 234 (Mangalore – Villupuram) pass through Vellore.
  • Mineral rich district, minerals like red clay, brick clay are also found in this district.
  • Ranipet is an industrial center of South India. There are many large and medium sized leather industries exporting leather and leather goods such as shoes, garments etc.
  • Ranipet has other small-scale industries, mostly involved in chemical, leather and tool manufacturing. These industries are the main lifeblood of the city.
  • Along the banks of the Ranipet Lake, two bell towers have been built in memory of King Raja Desingu and his wife Ranibai.
  • Ranipet was the area where the main regiments of the British stayed. As Raja Desingu refused to pay taxes, the Nawabs of Arcot invaded Senji Fort and killed the King. When Raja Desingu's body was cremated, his wife Ranibai joined him.
  • Affected by this event, the Nawab of Arcot Saadatullah Khan erected marble bell towers for the Raja Desingu and Ranibai on the other bank of the Palar River in Arcot. History says that the city of 'Ranipet' was built to honor the martyrdom of the queen Ranibai.

Ratnagiri Bala Murugan Temple
This Temple is 12 km away from Vellore at Ranipet District. The Murugan temple, built on a small hill here, is ancient and beautiful. Panguni Uttra Utsavam is specially conducted in this temple.

Arulmigu Shri Yoga Narasimha Swamy Temple Sholinghur
Famous among the Vaishnava shrines is the Yoga Lakshmi Narasimha Perumal Temple at Sholinghur, which is visited by many devotees every full moon day. There is also an Anjaneya temple here. Navratri festival is celebrated grantly here.

Mahendravadi
About 7 km from Sholinghur Railway Station in Arakkonam Taluk, Ranipet District, Pallavar period Kudaivarai temple is located in a town known as "Mahendravadi". In the open environment, one can be delighted to see a round, large (stone) rock built into a beautiful stone epic - the Kudaivarai Temple by the Pallava king Mahendravarman (590 - 630 AD). This artwork is a beautiful cave temple carved out of this rock.

Kanchanagiri Hills
Kanchanagiri Hill is a scenic hill at about 1,500 feet above the ground, carrying a spiritual history of more than a thousand years, with the largest reserve forest in Ranipet district. At the top of Tirukanchanagiri hill, in the middle of the plain area of about 60 acres, we can find Kanchanadevi and Kanchaneshwara Shivalingam. The temple complex includes Veda Vinayagar, 1,008 Swayambu Lingams, Jyoti Lingam, Valli with 16-legged hall, Devasena Udanurai Sri Subramanya Temple, Swayambu Venkatesa Perumal, Ayyappan, Abhaya Anjaneyar and Saptha Kanniyar sannidi. At the foot of the hill, A Shiva temple is also located there. The Full Moon (Purnima) festival of tamil Chitrai month is celebrated annually in this temple.
