About Salem District and Its History
- Salem city is the headquarters of the Salem District in Tamilnadu. Dharmapuri district was separated from Salem district in 1965.
- Salem is famous for Mango and is also called Mango City in Tamilnadu. Salem district is also famous for weaving.
- Yercaud hills called as poor people's Ooty are a famous tourist destination place situated near Salem.
- Salem is famous for Traditional silver Anklets, Textile Industries, Automobiles, Poultry, and Sago Industries. Dalmia and TANMAG are the big industries located here, due to large deposits of Magnesite in this district. It is noteworthy that India's first quality steel plate is manufactured here.
- Mettur Dam is the main source of irrigation in this district. The city of Salem is situated in the middle of a pleasant natural environment surrounded by mountains on all four sides.
- Salem was ruled by Madurai Nayaks for many years. Later Mughal Emperor Hyder Ali ruled this place. Many Famous persons like Tamil Poet Avvaiyar, Salem Ramasamy Mudailar, C. Vijayaraghavachariar, Pagadala Narasimhalu, C. Rajagopalachari, and Dr. P. Subbarayan are belonging to this Salem District.

Salem Famous Tourist Attractions & Places of Interest
Government Museum Salem
The Government Museum is located opposite the Corporation Office on Omalur Road in Salem.
Various artefacts including ancient paintings and sculptures have been preserved here.
Arulmigu Sugavaneswarar Swamy Temple
It is notable among the famous and large temples in Salem city. This temple is also known as Kili
Valamudair Temple, which is resplendent with beautiful carvings. Swarnambigai amman temple here is
also very famous. The festival of Mahashivaratri is celebrated here in a grand manner.
Sri Kottai Mariamman Koil Salem
Located in the heart of Salem city, Kottai Mariamman temple is ancient and famous. It is one of the
oldest temples in the district. Utsavam and festivals held here at Aadi Avani months are famous here.
Kurumbapatti Zoological Park
Covering an area of about 50 acres at the foothills of Yercaud, the zoo established by the Tamil Nadu
government is one of the major tourist centers of Salem. This park is located at Kurumbapatti, 13
kilometers from Salem.
Sri Kailasanathar Thirukoil Salem
Kailasanathar Temple, a famous Shiva temple at Tharamangalam near Salem city, is very ancient.
The Raja Gopuram here consists of 5 tiers with eye-catchingly beautiful carvings. The massive
enclosure walls and the sculptured temple are noteworthy.
Sankagiri Fort
The fort built on Sankagiri Hill was built during the reign of Tipu Sultan. The multi-walled fort
has 2 mosques and 5 temples. Ancient weapons, ornaments etc. are preserved and displayed here.
Skandasramam Murugan Temple
At Udayar Palayam near Attur, a temple called Skandasramam is situated in a beautiful place
surrounded by hills. It is one of the famous temples in Salem district.
Poiman Karadu in Salem
This place, which is about 3 kilometers from Salem, is also known as Poiman Karadu. Here you can
see the antlered head of a deer if you look at the hill from a certain point. But if you go near
the hill, you cannot see it. Poiman can be seen only when the sun is present.
Yercaud
Located in the Servarayan mountain range, Yercaud is the feeder of the poor. Yercaud is a special
attraction to Salem district. On the road leading to that hill in the city limits you will find
20 semi-circular arches. Yercaud is an exciting place with many features that attract tourists.
Botanical Garden Yercaud
One of the highlights of Yercaud is the large area of botanical garden with thousands of plants
and beautiful flowers. A carnivorous plant called the pitcher plant here is notable.
Yercaud Lake
The main attraction of Yercaud is the beautiful lake which holds the distinction of being the
largest of the lakes in the foothills. The beauty of the sprawling lake in the lush surroundings
is mesmerizing. The nearby Anna Park has games to keep the kids entertained.
Servarayan Temple Yercaud
In the cave temple built on the top of Servarayar hill, Ramaswamy is worshiped by the tribal
people of this mountain. A large number of Malayalam people come to this temple festival
every year.
Retreat Churuch Yercaud
Enjoy the view of Yercaud from the area where the Retreat station is located, which was
established by the Don Bosco congregation about 60 years ago. This place is at a distance
of 3 km from the bus stand.
Pagoda Point Yercaud
This is one of the best places to visit in Yercaud.
