About Sivagangai District and Its History

  • Sivagangai town is the headquarters of the Sivagangai District in Tamilnadu. Karaikudi city is the biggest and most famous place in this district. Nattu Kottai Chettiars are highly found in this district.
  • Two Famous Educational Institutions like Alagappa University and CECRI are found here. This district is popularly known as "Chettinad".

  • The soil of Sivaganga is the proud place where the Maruthu Pandiyar brothers lived who did not accept the domination of the British. The elder Maruthu, who was not yet 53 years old, and his younger brother, who was not yet 48 years old, refused to pay taxes to the British and fought valiantly till the end. The British who captured them and hanged them on a same day in October 1801. Kavi Arasar Kannadasan was born in the historic Sivagangai district.
  • Ramnad, Sivaganga, and Pudukottai were the three territories under the Ramnad Kingdom on those days. This kingdom was ruled by Kilavan Sethupathi from 1674 to 1710. This district is surrounded by districts such as "Pudukkottai", "Ramanathapuram", "Virudhunagar", "Madurai" and "Trichy".

Maruthupandiyar Memorial
The memorial of Maruthu Pandyas is located in Sivaganga Swedish Mission Hospital campus. Tools, objects, etc. used in their time have been preserved and put on display.

Kalaiyar Kovil
At a distance of 18 kilometers from Sivaganga lies the famous Shiva temple, Kalayar Temple. The main god of this temple is called Kaliswarar, this temple is beautiful with the biggest Theppakulam and Raja Gopurams. It is 30 km from Devakottai.

Thirukkoshtiyur Sri Arulmigu Sowmiya Narayana Perumal Temple
One of the famous 108 Vaishnava temples, Tirukoshtiyur Swami Narayana Perumal Temple is known as South Tirupati. Ramanujar, one of the Vaishnava Azhwars, is said to have visited the temple and worshipped. This is also the place where he received his teachings. Deepam festival is celebrated in the temple on the day of Maasi Maham.

Kundrakudi
The famous Murugan temple near Karaikudi is located at Kundrakudi. The main god here is called as Arultharu Shanmuganathan. The history of this temple, which stands out on a small hill, goes back thousands of years. Various renovations were done in this temple during Maruthupandiyar period. Festivals like Thaipusam, Panguni Uthiram, Thirukarthigai and Kandha Sasti etc. are conducted very well in this temple.

Sacred Heart Shrine Idaikkattur
The Idaikkattur church was built around 100 years ago, Located on the road to Ramanathapuram. Beautifully designed in the style of a famous church in Paris, the architecture and architectural style of this temple is sure to captivate the eye and the mind.

Pillayarpatti Temple
Pilliyarpatti is the place where the famous Karpaka Vinayagar Temple stands, 15 kilometers from Karaikudi city and 6 kilometer from Tiruppathur. This ancient temple is more than 1600 years old and has been built in the style of Kudavara temple. The Sculptor who designed the Karpaka Vinayagar and Shiva Lingam here can be seen inscribed with his hand writing. This temple is functioning under the patronage of Nattukottai Nagarathar.
Karpaga Vinyagar, who has a temple in this place, is very famous. By the way, Karpaga Vinyagar is known all over the world. Here Ganesha sitting towards north is a special feature. Pujas are being performed here according to Agama Vidhi. A 10-day festival is held every year on the occasion of Vinayagar Chaturthi.
The sculptures and paintings in this temple are worth seeing. The painting of Ganesha in the decorative hall of the temple is a masterpiece. Wherever you stand and look at him, he looks at you. Accommodation facilities are also available here. There are many bus facilities from Karaikudi and Tirupattur.

Arulmigu Sri Vairavar Swamy Temple Vairavanpatti
The town is situated at a distance of 5 km from Tirupattur, 16 km from Karaikudi and 1 km from Pilliyarpatti in Sivagangai district. The temple located here is made up of beautiful sculptures. The lingam in this temple is considered to be Swayambhu Lingam.
Vairavar Theertham located in this temple is famous. Bathing in this theertham is believed to ensure child birth. Vairavar is mainly worshipped in ths temple. This temple is maintained by the Nattukottai Nagarathar. There are bus facilities from Karaikudi and Tiruppathur.

Sirukodalpatti
This is the birthplace of Kavyarasar Kannadasan. Here his house is maintained as a memorial. The temple of Sri Malayarasi Amman, who graced him, is worth a visit. It is located at a distance of 5 km from Pillayarpatti and 3 km from Vairavanpatti.

Kandadevi Temple
Kanda Devi is located near Devakottai. Sorna Murtheeswarar Periya Naiki Amman temple is here. It has a history of more than 350 years. Aani Utsavam held here every year in the month of Aani is very famous. Thousands of devotees gather at that time to worship.

Kavi Arasar Kannadasan Manimandabam
Mani Mandapam has been erected in Karaikudi (near bus stand) to celebrate the fame of Kavyarasar Kannadasan who has gained immortal fame.

Karaikudi
Karaikudi, the capital of the Nagarathar, is a town 45 kilometers from Sivagangai. The famous Alagappa University and ship-like houses are the major highlights of this place. Additional Interesting News about Karaikudi
A thief has been hiding in the attic of a house in Karaikudi for six months without the knowledge of the people of that house. Such large ship-like houses are found in the Chettinad area around Karaikudi. In 1980, this news appeared in the news papers.
