Role and Responsibilities of Tamil Nadu Mayors
Cities First Citizen is Mr. Mayor. He is, he will be the overall voice of the city, says the local government structure. Here are the Mayor's powers and privileges:
- The mayor is responsible for conducting the meetings of councilors elected by the people.
- The mayor will present the resolutions at the councilor's meeting. It is the mayor's choice to accept and avoid resolutions brought by others.
- Mayor has the authority to sanction projects up to Rs.1 crore. But, that power must be obtained with the approval of the councilors meeting.
- In case of urgency, without seeking the approval of councilors, Mayors can give prior approval and execute projects. Later they can get approval from counselors.
- There is no separate salary for the mayor. A bungalow will be provided to the Mayor on behalf of the Corporation to live in for the duration of his tenure. A car will be provided to the Mayor on behalf of the Corporation. Fuel will also be provided.
- The Mayor will be allotted a separate room in the Corporation office. Like the Collector and Commissioners, the Mayor will be accompanied by a "Dawali".
- Mayor's approval is very important for all Corporation projects.
