About Tamil Nadu Universities and History of Universities in Tamilnadu
Universities are major contributors to the higher education development of a country. It is the purpose of the university to have degrees, post-graduate, and research courses in many fields and to have complete infrastructural facilities for them.
We read in history that the Nalanda University and Thaksin University attracted students from around the world during the period when the nation of India excelled in wealth and education. Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu was known as a university town. They have become legends.
Now, if we want to produce students who can meet the challenges of the world to meet the pace of the times, the number of institutions providing higher education to them should be increased. Not only the number but also their academic quality and research capacity should be improved.
In this case, knowing some basic information about the status of universities in India will give you a sense of our strength in the higher education sector.
According to the University Grants Commission (UGC) website, there are currently 45 central universities, 322 state-run universities, 128 virtual universities, and 192 private universities in the country. In total, there are 687 universities in India.
Among these, the states of Gujarat (24) and Uttar Pradesh (24) have the highest number of state-run universities. It is followed by Karnataka (23), Tamil Nadu (22), Maharashtra (20), and Andhra Pradesh (20). There are 322 state government universities running across the country.
The University Grants Commission (UGC), administered by the central government, is responsible for regulating universities in the country. 192 private universities are functioning in the country with its approval. There are no private universities in Tamil Nadu. Rajasthan (39), Uttar Pradesh (23), and Gujarat (17) are leading the list.
There are 128 educational institutions across the country that have obtained the status of virtual universities. Tamil Nadu tops the list with 28 online universities. Maharashtra (21) and Karnataka (14) are next.
Uttar Pradesh (5) has the top number of central universities run by the central government. Telangana (3) and Tamil Nadu (2) is in the next position. Maharashtra, Assam, Jammu and Kashmir, and Manipur also have two central universities each. Most states in India have at least one central university.
