About Theni District and Its History
- Theni town is the headquarters of the Theni District in Tamilnadu. This district was separated from Madurai on the year 1996. After separating, three taluks like Uttama-Palayam, Periyakulam and Andipatti were come under this district.
- This district is located on the bank of River Mullai Periyar. This province is completely surrounded by Natural Wealth. Theni is a beautiful hilly district.

Theni Famous Tourist Attractions & Places of Interest
Theertha Thotti
The most famous Murugan temple in Theni region is located here. The natural water near this temple is called Theertha Thotti.
This famous temple is located a little away from Theni, on the way to Bodinayakanur.
Vaigai Dam
Vaigai Dam is located near Aandipatti, about 26 kilometers from Theni. A very beautiful park, children's play center,
biological museum etc. are tourist attractions in Theni. At night this dam is very beautiful to see. Vaigai Dam is one
of the most popular tourist attractions in Theni. Aandipatti can be reached by bus and train from Madurai.
Suruli Falls
Around 10 kilometers from Kambam town is Suruli Falls, A large number of tourists come to enjoy bathing in this
waterfall located on a very beautiful hillside.
Sri Kailasanathar Temple Theni
Sri Kailasanathar Temple is located on the hill above Suruli Falls, and the festivals held here during Chitra Pournami
and thai amavasai are very popular. Many devotees gather at that time not only from this district but also from other places.
It is said that drinking the water from the natural spring at this place cures various diseases.
Mastan Dargah
Mounasamy Abubakar Mastan Dargah is located near Suruli Falls. He lived in the 16th century and is buried here. This is one
of the main pilgrimage sites of the Muslim people of Theni, Madurai and Dindigul districts.
Kumbakkarai Falls
Kumbakarai Falls is located about 8 kilometers from the large pond. Located in a breathtakingly beautiful forest environment,
Tourist can take a dip in this waterfall except during the rainy season. Here in the dense trees, a large number of birds gather
and the chirping is mind-blowing. Buses are available to reach this area. It is one of the tourist attractions in Theni district.
Kodaikanal is near to this area.
Veerappa Ayyanar Alli Nagaram
The famous Veerappa Ayyanar temple is located in Allinagaram, about 3.5 kms near Theni. It is one of the famous places in
this district. The festival held here on the birthday of the Tamil new year is very popular. It is a popular festival where
local and foreign devotees gather in large numbers.
Sri Balasubramaniar Aalayam
This is one of the famous temples in Periya Kulam. It is an ancient and beautiful temple built by the Chola king.
A special festival takes place during Panguni Uthiram and Maha Karthigai.
Megamalai
Meghamalai is located about 56 kilometers from Theni. This mesmerizing region is situated at an altitude of 4700 feet
above sea level. Cardamom and tea plantations abound in the region.
Devadanapatti Kamakshi Amman Temple
Manjalar Dam is located near Devadanapatti in PeriyaKulam area. In the mountain area surrounding it, there are three
small waterfalls and one big waterfall. The Kamatsiyamman temple located at Manchalarankarai is very popular in the region.
Festivals like Maha Shivratri and Masi Magam are celebrated here. The temple is 24 km from the Periyakulam. Built in
the 18th century.
Kuchanur
About 22 kilometers from Theni is the famous Saneeswaran temple near Chinnamanur. It is noteworthy that apart from
Kuchanur, which is one of the Navagraha temples, there is no separate temple for Saneeswarar anywhere else.
The annual festival held here in the month of Aadi is very popular, Devotees come from different places to this temple.
Mavoothu Velappar Subramanya Swami Temple
Mavoottru is about 21 kilometers from Andippatti. Murugan temple is located on the hill in this area located in the
most beautiful rain forest. The main god is called Velappar. Devotees can go in morning and evening to worship.
There is a bus facility from Andipatti to reach this mind-blowing place.
Sothuparai
Sothuparai is about 13 kilometers from Periyakulam. The water reservoir here and the surrounding areas are beautiful.

About 25 kilometers from Bodi Naikkanur, Bodi Mettu is located at an altitude of 1400 meters above sea level.
