About Thiruvarur District and Its History

  • Thiruvarur city is the headquarters of Thiruvarur District in Tamilnadu. For administrative convenience it was separated from Tanjore district and declared Panneer Selvam district. Later it was changed to Tiruvarur district.
  • Thiruvarur was ruled by Great King Cholas. From those days, Thyagaraja Swamy Temple here is spacious with beautiful carvings, It is one of the largest temples in South India. Thiruvarur is famous for its biggest temple chariot in Tamilnadu. The aazhi ther Utsavam celebrated here every year is very popular.
  • "Panchamukha Vadyam" is the popular musical instrument found in this temple. History tells that this instrument was played by Nanchi Devi, While Lord Shiva was Dancing.
  • Thirukkuvalai, the birthplace of the Mr.M.Karunanidhi, is near Thiruvarur. A chariot-shaped mandapam was constructed in Chennai's Valluvar Kottam, modeled after the Tiruvarur chariot. Theppotsavam which takes place at Panguni in Thiruvarur Kamalalayam Pond is famous.
  • Tiruvarur has the honor of being the incarnation of Music Legends Tyagaraja, Muthuswami Dikshitar and Shyama Shastri, who are revered as Trinity of Carnatic music.

Alangudi Sivan Temple
Alangudi is located at a distance of 34 km from Thiruvarur. One of the Navagraha shrines. A large number of devotees come here to visit Guru Bhagavan.

Arulmigu Shri Rajagopalaswamy Temple Mannargudi
The Rajagopalaswamy Temple, established with beautiful carvings, is a very famous Temple in Mannargudi. It is about 30 kilometers from Thiruvarur. The festival of panguni uthiram is celebrated here.

Koothanur Maha Saraswathi Temple
This place is near to Poonthottam on the way from Thiruvarur to Mayiladuthurai. It is worth noting that a temple has been established here for Saraswathi. It can be reached by a 1 hour drive from Thiruvarur.

Arulmigu Enkan Thiru Subramanya Swamy murugar koil
Enkan is one of the famous Temples of Lord Murugan. It is noteworthy that the main god has been designed with the highest sculptural technique. This place is located at a distance of about 15 kilometers from Thiruvarur.

Thirukkannamangai
The Main god here is known as Bhaktavatsala Perumal Temple. This temple is located at a distance of 6 km from Thiruvarur.

Thirukkannapuram
This temple is located at a distance of about 7 kilometers from Nannilam. It is believed that Kannappar plucked his eyes and kept them on the lingam.

Udayamarthandapuram Bird Sanctuary
Located at Udaya Marthandhapuram, about 21 kilometers from Thiruthuraipoondi, many rare species of birds visit from different parts of the world. It is found in abundance in the months of November and December.

Muthupettai Mangrove Forest / Lagoon
Many rare fishes can be found in the water bodies of Muthupettai Mangrove Forest which is spread over a large area. It is a beautiful forest area with pleasant atmosphere.

Muthupet Dargah
One of the oldest and most famous dargahs in Tamil Nadu, the annual Sandalwood Festival at Sheik Dawood Kamlil Valyullah Dargah in Muthupettai is very popular.
