About Thoothukudi District and Its History
- Thoothukudi city is the headquarters of Thoothukudi district in Tamilnadu. This district was separated from Tirunelveli district in 1986.
- This city is popularly known as "Pearl City" and is famous for Pearl fishery and Shipbuilding. This district had a great name in Indian Independence against the British. One of the well-known oldest seaports in the world. Light House is one of the famous landmarks located in Thoothukudi.
- This district is leading in salt production, fishing industry, chemical and thermal power production.
- This district and its seaport were under the control of different emperors like the Pandyan Kingdom, Portuguese, Dutch and British. Thoothukudi Famous Tourist Attractions & Places of Interest
Thiruchendur
The one and only Murugan temple located on the coast of Tiruchendur, one of the Arupadai veedigal, is special.
The temple is very ancient with excellent sculptures. This place is famous in devotional literature as Thirucheeralaivai.
Festivals such as Soorasamhara Utsavam, Thirukarthigai, Panguni Uthiram etc. are celebrated at this place every year in the
month of Aippasi. A large number of devotees gather here from all over Tamil Nadu. Thiruchendur sea is suitable for bathing.
Chinthalakarai
The place is about 6 km from Ettaiyapuram. It is the first Among the famous Shakti Peedams in this district.
The statue of vekkaliamman god installed in this temple is very colossal. It is noteworthy that no other
place in India has such a large Kaali Temple.
Magaakavi Subramaniya Bharathiar Ninaivu Mandapam
About 35 kilometers from Tuticorin is Ettaiyapuram, the birth place of Mahakavi Bharathiyar. The Mani Mandapam erected
here to honor his memory shines with great splendor. A memorial has been set up for the poet Umaru Pulavarat Ettaiyapuram,
which has a history of about 500 years.
Kulasekharapatnam
Kulasekharapatnam is about 21 kilometers from Thiruchendur. The Mutharamman temple here is very famous.
Muthuramasamy Temple is a popular Vaishnava shrine. Dussehra festival is celebrated every year in this town.
The beach here is very beautiful.
Manapadu
It is located on the coast at a distance of about 16 kilometers from Thiruchendur. There is an ancient church here.
The cross here is said to have been brought from Jerusalem and erected here. The church here was built in the 15th century.
Ayyanar Sunai
Ayyanar Sunai is located 11 km from Tiruchendur. Ayyanar Sunai is named after a natural spring near the Ayyannar temple, which is
established in a very dry place. This temple is very famous in this area.
Sri Vaikuntam Temple
Sri Vaikuntam is the area where the Nava Tirupatis are situated on the banks of the Thamirabarani River. The Vaikunda Pathi Sami
temple here has very beautiful sculptures. This is the first occurrence in Nava Tirupati. Other Tirupatis are located at
Varagunamangai, Thirupuliyangudi, Thirutholaivillimangalam, Tirukulandhai, Thenthiruperai, Alwarthirunagari, and Thirukkolur etc.
V.O. Chidambaram Pillai
In Ottapidaram, V.O.C. birthplace has been converted into his memorial. A collection of interesting photographs, biographical documents, etc.
of V.O.C.are on display in the well-presented gallery. There is also a statue of him. The checku drawn by him while he was in jail has been
preserved in Chennai and is on display.
Panchalankurichi
Panchalankurichi near Ottapidaram is the place where Brave Warrior Veerapandiya Kattabomman ruled and lived. As the fort he built was destroyed,
a new fort was built at that place by the government of Tamil Nadu in 1974 and the fame of Veerapandiya Kattabomman is spreading.
Visitors are allowed from morning 8 am to evening 6 pm. The place where Kattabomman was hanged is maintained and protected by the government
in Kayatharu area.
Deivaseyalpuram
78 feet tall Anjeneyar temple is established at this place which is 25 km from Thoothukudi.
