About Tiruvannamalai District and Its History

  • Tiruvannamalai district was ruled by small kings like Sambuvarayars, who were under the control of the Chola dynasty. After that, it was ruled by Vijayanagara Kings, Arcot Nawabs, and British.
  • In the year 1989, on 30th September, this Tiruvannamalai district was separated from North Arcot district and formed as Tiruvannamalai Sambuvarayar district. Later it was changed to Tiruvannamalai district by the year 1997.
  • Arunachaleswarar temple is considered as one of the major Shiva temples, very large temple located in the beautiful mountainous environment. A large number of devotees from all over India come to participate in the girivalam held here on every full moon day. It is worth mentioning that there are about 100 temples in Tiruvannamalai area.
  • This town has the honor of being the birthplace of Arunagirinathar, who sang Thiruppugal. Arani in this district is famous for silk sarees. The fragrant Javvadu Hill is also located here. Karthikai Deepam festival is very famous in this temple.
  • Tiruvannamalai district is bordered by Kanchipuram, Vellore, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri and Villupuram districts.

Sathanur Dam
Built at Pennaiyar River, about 31 kilometers from Tiruvannamalai, this dam has beautiful structures that attract tourists. Many movies were shooted in this dam. There is a small crocodile farm here.

Ramanasramam
Ramanasramam, built by the famous religious sage Ramana Maharishi, is located near the temple. It is noteworthy that devotees from all over the world come here.

Yogi Ramsuratkumar Ashram / Visiri Samiyar
An ashram of Yogi Ram Surathkumar, who is known as Visiri Samiyar, is located near Ramanasram.

Arulmigu Arunachaleswarar Temple
Arunachaleswarar Temple, shaped like a jothilingam, is beautifully displayed at the foot of the hill. It is believed that the Lord appears in the form of a jothi at Thiruvannamalai, one of the Pancha Bhoota Stalams. Distinguished as the largest of the Lord Shiva temples, the imposing tower of this temple is full of eye-catching features.
The most popular festival is Deepam which is celebrated for 10days in the month of Karthigai. Similarly, Arudra darshan which takes place in the month of Margazhi is also significant. Thiruvoodal vaibhavam celebrated in Thai month is also special. The brahmotsavam festival held in Karthigai is also famous in this temple.
