About Vellore District and Its History
- Vellore was ruled by small kings. Later it was ruled by Vijayanagar kings, Arcot Nawab, and British. In 1806, Vellore sippai mutiny was found as the origin for Indian sepoy mutiny in 1857.
- At first, it was called as north Arcot district. This district was separated from north Arcot district on 30th September 1989 and named as Ambedkar district. From 1997, this district was called Vellore district, because of the district headquarters Vellore.
- Vellore is famous for its beautiful fort Jalakandeswarar Temple, famous CMC Hospital, Central Jail, and yelagiri Hills. It is notable that Vellore has become an industrially progressive district due to the active action of the Government.
- Vellore district is surrounded by Thiruvallur in the East, Tiruvannamalai districts in the South, Dharmapuri districts in the West, and Chittoor districts in North.

Vellore Famous Tourist Attractions & Places of Interest
Jalakandeswarar Temple
Jalakandeswarar temple is built with artistic flair inside the Vellore fort area. There are many temples here
including Natarajar temple. The round prakaram and the wedding hall here are very elaborately designed.
Muthu Mandapam Vellore
Vikrama Raja Singham, the last Tamil king to rule Sri Lanka, fought a long war with the British and was
eventually captured and died in Vellore. The memorial built in the Samadhi of king is given as Muthu Mandapam.
This muthu mandapam is located near Palar River.
Sri Margabandeeswarar Temple Virinjipuram
Virinjipuram, a 15-minute drive from Vellore, is one of the famous 18 Siva Temple. The sculptural works of this glorious
temple, graced by Appar, are eye-catching.
Kangeyanallur
The Kumaran temple was built during the Chola period, Located at Kangeyanallur near Vellore. Thiru Muruga Kirupanandha Variyar
swamigal has maintained this temple with special care.
Kirubandha Variyar Memorial Kangeyanallur
Thirumuruga Kirubandha Variyar's birthplace, Kangeyanallur, has a large Variyar memorial near the Murugan temple where he
worshipped. Manimandapam here is very beautiful.
Kavalur Observatory
The town is located in the Jawadhu mountain range. The telescope installed here was built during the British rule.
It is currently under the maintenance of a central government institution.
Vellore Amirthi Zoological Park
About 30 kilometers from Vellore, Amriti Zoological Park is located at the foothills of Jawadhu Hills.
Many wild animals and birds can be seen in this park which is maintained by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department.
The park is full of sandalwood trees. Accommodation is provided here for tourists.
Government Museum Vellore Fort
Government Museum near Vellore Bus Stand. Rare ancient coins and many artefacts are on display here.
Sri Lakshmi Narayani Golden Temple Sripuram
When you think of the Golden Temple, the Golden Temple in Amritsar, Punjab comes to mind.
Here is a golden temple in our town. Do you know this place? Sri Sakthi Amma established
this grand temple on behalf of Ariyur Malaikodi Sri Narayani Siddhar Peedam at Sripuram,
7 kms from Vellore City in Vellore District.
This golden temple has been constructed in an area of 100 acres with 1500 kg of gold at
a cost of 300 crore rupees. A must see place if you go to Vellore.
