About Viluppuram District and Its History

  • Viluppuram is the administrative headquarters of the Viluppuram district. Ramasamy Padayachi District was declared and later renamed as viluppuram District.
  • The geographical extend of Villupuram district is surrounded on East and south by Cuddalore district, west by kallakurichi district, north by Thiruvannamalai and Kanchipuram district. Agriculture is the main source of income in this district.
  • 75% of people engaged in agriculture. Paddy, Blackgram, and Sugarcane are the major crops cultivated in this district. Govt. medical college, Mailam Engineering College and Claribel Matriculation School are the important educational institution in Villupuram District.
  • It is one of the districts with the most temples. viluppuram District was Nandanar's birthplace.
  • In 1677, Shivaji ruled this district with the support of Golkonda forces. After Chhatrapati Shivaji period, English, French, and East India company ruled this district. Like other areas in Tamil Nadu, the viluppuram district as under the control of the British till 1947.

Viluppuram Famous Tourist Attractions & Places of Interest

Gingee Fort
The red fort is built on a huge area between three hills namely Rajagiri, Chandragiri, and Krishnagiri. Desingurajan is a notable among the kings who ruled Senji. Gingee Fort was built in the late 12th century.

Tirukoilur / Tirukovilur
One of the famous Vaishnava temples, Sri Ulagalanda Perumal and pushpavalli amman are the main gods. At a distance of about 38 km from Villupuram, there is Kabilar Kundru, the place where Kabilar lived, at Thirukovilur. It is under the administration of the Government of Tamil Nadu. In Thiruvannamalai and Chittoor buses, we can go to Thirukovilur.

Singavaram
Desingurajan worshiped at a cave temple situated on a hill in Senji. The statue of Aranganathar Perumal, the main god here, is made of a single stone.

Shri Ulagalantha Perumal Temple
A tall gopuram was erected near the Ulagalantha Perumal Temple. It looks as majestic as the Great Temple of Tanjore.

Mailam
Mailam is near Viluppuram. The Kumaran temple built on a small hill here is very famous. Main god of temple is known as Subramanya Swamy. Karthigai and Panguni Utsavam are well conducted here. The temple is maintained by the mailam adheenam.

Thiruvathigai
The ancient and famous Shiva temple is a 15-minute drive from Panruti.

Thiruvakkarai
Vakrakaliamman Temple here is very famous. In the month of Aadi, the worship takes place in very grand manner. This place is at a distance of 17 km from Villupuram.

Thiruvikrama Swamy Thirukovilur
Vikaramasamy temple in Thirukovilur is one of the most ancient and famous Vaishnava temples.

Koovagam
Koothandavar Temple is located in this town near Villupuram. Puranas have it that Thirumal disguised himself as a woman, married aravan and sacrificed the prince to win the Mahabharata war as no one came forward to marry the Aravan prince, the son of Aravani born to Arjuna.
Based on the incident of the loss of the mangal naan, the transgender gather here every year, tie a mangalsutra and cut it the next day. It is noteworthy that transgenders from all over India come for the koovagam festival held annually in the month of chithirai.

Melmalayanur
Melmalayanur Angala Parameswari Amman Temple near Villupuram is a very famous temple. Special Aradhana Abhisheka programs are held here on every full moon day.
